It is with great sadness, I report that V12 Pedigrees bred in partnership Wentworth Park city winner - Spanky (Bit Chili x Good Signing) has been retired forthwith.

As reported by mate Sandro Bechini...

"She [Spanky] contested a heat of the Group 2 Ladies Bracelet last Saturday night [at Wentworth Park] and in the home straight when National Penny fought Miss Peru she crashed into the back of them and much to the shock of her large group of owners and supporters tumbled several times and snapped her off foreleg and got up screaming in pain.

Thankfully she will be saved for a breeding career & has been permanently retired

Her owners are the best enthusiastic bunch of young blokes you will ever meet and I am tipping at least 3 of them will stay in greyhounds long term

Spanky gave them great thrills and when they turned up at the track they were the talk of the track with the sheer enthusiasm and emotion, win, lose or draw..

On Saturday night they showed great spirit for 1st time owners in the face of great disappointment. They also showed great comradery in consoling each other and then getting a vet organized for her recovery.

Several years after Steve White took Australian greyhound racing by storm with his immortal bitch Paua To Burn, the Nowra-based trainer is back on the Group One trail with semi-finalists in both the National Derby and Futurity at The Gardens on Friday afternoon.

Droopy’s Fool will contest the first of two Derby semis, while Paua To Erupt, a daughter of White’s Hall of Famer Paua To Burn, is engaged in the opening Futurity qualifier.

Both made their Gardens debuts in last Friday’s Derby and Futurity heats, with Droopy’s Fool impressive in winning a star-studded run-off, while Paua To Erupt ran third in her Futurity heat.

Droopy’s Fool clocked 29.88s in the opening round of the Derby series, leaving a hot field in his wake, including boom trio Silent Guardian, Outa Credit and Lochinvar Marlow.

His semi-final task will again will be a tough one, with his opponents including equal fastest heat winner Elite Blue Size, star Victorian Silent Guardian once again and Gosford Cup finalist Bogie Brave, however White is hopeful his lightly-raced charge can qualify for the Derby decider.

“He’s not a bad dog, everywhere he’s gone he’s won and run time,” White offered.

“We had a bit of a hiccup with him a few weeks ago when he picked up an infection and he had two starts at Wenty where he wasn’t himself but then he went good at Wenty and then at The Gardens last week.

“Neither of them had been to The Gardens before their heats and I was just lucky they both drew box one. Droopy’s Fool has drawn close to the fence again this week (three) which is good because you really have to draw between one and four to be any chance at The Gardens.

“I expect him to improve this week and the key to his chances is getting over to the fence. I don’t think his semi is any harder than last week’s heat and he’s definitely capable of running in the first four and making it into the final.

“He’s definitely my best chance on Friday. I really only took Paua To Erupt along with him and it would be a feather in her cap if she could make the final.

“In saying that, she was a bit unlucky in her heat and she’s got good pace. She’s drawn well again (two) and her best chance is if she can beat the red (Daydream) out and get on the fence.

“I won a few Group races since Paua To Burn with Stole The Show but it would be nice to be back in a Group One again so hopefully one or both of them can make it through.”

Produce star Expert is sold to Buckley camp

LEADING British-bred puppy Romeo Expert has been bought by Irish trainer Pat Buckley and is being aimed at the Comerford Cakes National Puppy Stake at Shelbourne in two weeks.

The son of Collision and Fabulous March was bred by Dave Firmager and was an impressive winner of Swindon’s Produce Stakes before suffering defeat in two subsequent races at Nottingham.

He was collected by Buckley during the week and is now settling in nicely in his new kennel. He is now owned by Joe Cahill and he adds considerably to an already strong Buckley kennel strength.

It promises to be a fantastic National Puppy Stake. Among the entry will be Buckley’s Puppy Derby winner Tullymurry Act who had his first look at Shelbourne on Saturday, clocking an impressive 28.35sec trial.

Romeo loves the Abbey as record falls

Romeo Expert, the puppy sensation, lived up to the huge amount hype and expectation that has engulfed him during a very short track career with an extraordinary display in the final of the 63rd Two Year Old Produce Stakes at the Abbey Stadium.
Dave Firmager’s dog has been talked about nationwide but had blotted his copybook in the semi-finals.

When it came to the showpiece however, the canine star didn’t fluff his lines when it mattered most.

With his semi-final reversal obviously fresh in punters’ minds, the Coventry raider drifted in the betting from 4/7 to evens but 28.29 seconds later - a track record shattering performance - those odds were made to look very generous indeed.

A quick break, followed by a slight bump at the first bend, soon put him in control before he miraculously pulled further and further clear to annihilate an extremely talented field by over seven lengths.

Best of the rest was Milly Marina who ran on well having taken a bump at the first bend while Eye Eye Pickle, one of the main fancies for the competition prior to its commencement was a length back in third.

Westmead Bolt, trained by the multiple Derby-winning trainer Nick Savva, and Guinness time, trained by Trainers Championship winner Seamus Cahill, were fourth and fifth respectively having been involved in some early trouble The next stop for Romeo Expert is likely to be the Puppy Derby or Nottingham’s Produce Stakes but his run on Saturday will go down as one of the greatest performances ever seen at Blunsdon.

ROMEO EXPERT, a December 07 son of Collision trained by Dave Firmager, took star billing in Friday’s second round of the 63rd Two Year Old Produce Stakes at Swindon, after which four-time Derby-winning handler Nick Savva hailed him as “a flying machine who will take a lot of beating”.

Having just his second career start, Romeo Expert, who had set tongues wagging by winning his opening-round heat by over ten lengths, led at the first bend and proceeded to draw further and further clear, eventually crossing the line over eight lengths clear of Cashpointcharlie.

The winning time of 29.18sec – adjusted to 28.38sec when the -80 going allowance was taken into account – sets a very high standard which the other contestants will surely find difficult to match.

ROMEO EXPERT recorded a flying 28.76sec in Tuesday's batch of warm-up trials over 480m for the 63rd Two Year Old Produce Stakes at Swindon.

Dave Firmager's dog was fastest of the session, and his calculated time of 28.36sec (going -40) dipped under the official clock of 28.44sec held by Rhyzome Wizard. Kennelmate Romeo On Air was next best with 29.17sec, followed by Fabulous Verity who clocked 29.18sec.

The Swindon event, for British-bred puppies, kicks off on Saturday. The £15,000 final takes place on Saturday, July 23.

The rags to riches story spoken about in an earlier V12 Pedigrees' blog (May 2008) posting is complete. With Henny Hughes winning in the "city" at her second attempt - winning at Cannington, Western Australia in a very respectable 30.68 (Best of Night 30.62).

In short, Henny Hughes came about through my defending the worth of Moral Standards introduction into Australia. An owner of a legless Moral Standards broodbitch, Robs Queenlee (Moral Standards* x Lady Queenlee) - 22 starts 2-0-4, disatisfied with Moral Standards, challenged myself to breed something worthwhile with Robs Queenlee. And haven't we just...a $3,050 to-the-winner "city" win no less.

Robs Queenlee had produced little more than a country winner in her two previous litters. Showing firsthand the importance of pedigree, when attempting to breed successful racetrack performers.

Promising start for V12 Pedigrees

Of the 14 litters of racing age for V12 Pedigrees in Australia, UK & USA - for the those statistically minded:

11 out of the 14 litters have performed at city, open, Grade A class. That's a 79% strike rate.

Of those 11 litters - 7 have performed at Group winning, Group placing, Group contesting, feature winning, feature placing, feature contesting level. That's a 50% strike rate.

1 other litters got to A3 (UK) grade...the equivilent of 3rd grade/Grade C - with still racing time available. One other litter only had 2 pups and they lost the pups before racing age.

No wonder clients have returned for further breeding plans!

Henny Hughes (sale price $6,000) - this speedy and honest chasers' record currently stands at 22 starts 4-6-2 for $5,000 in prize money. With her either first or second in almost 50% of her starts to date and not 3yo 'til June 2009. A foregone conclusion Henny Hughes will recoup her sale price and then some.

Magic Manbo (sale price $1,500) - won a TAB feature race final, won and placed at Wentworth Park, Gosford, Richmond for $20,000 in Prize money. Magic Manbo finished with the record of 70 Starts 15-13-15

Quoting his new owner Dennis Mead "best dog we've owned in 20 years, even considering putting him to a brood of ours such was his genuine nature" - not bad for a $1,500 purchase.

Side note: Magic Manbo is a litter brother to the V12 Pedigrees' bred Kalden Fury...2006 & 2007 W.A.G.O.T.Y runner up, multiple feature race winner of $245,000 prize money.

Maribyrnong Girl (sale price $10,000) - went on to amass $25,000 in prize money including winning a heat of the Group 2 QLD Futurity and multiple city & TAB wins. Not to mention her value as a commercial broodbitch. Already whelping two litters and earning further dollars for her new owner.

Back in 2003, breeder Richard Knauff took a chance on V12 Pedigrees' recommendation of Gable Dodge for his broodbitch Tiawah Easymoney and was rewarded with a litter full of Grade A performers. With HKF Jade winning a whopping 31 races at leading American track Palm Beach.

That's 2 mating plans out of 2 for Richard Knauff and V12 Pedigrees'...a big congratulations to Richard!!

Never ending debate - ability v lack of...

Debate rages on and on whether a broodbitch with race ability outperforms a brood with lack of raceform. Obviously a brood with some ability or better will be bred with before a brood with no ability at all - therby increasing the odds in that broods chances of producing. But one thing that is undeniable - broods with no apparent ability do produce outstanding offspring. The fact the broods in this catagory are too numerous to mention - negate much of the opposing argument and continue to fuel breeders dreams of realising what numerous other opportune breeders have achieved - top class racers.

When you look at an outstanding broodbitch in Hall of Fame racer National Lass. Sure she proved a champion on the racetrack and as a broodbitch. But her first litter to Brother Fox, as you would expect, sold for big money. However, never set the racetrack on fire.

Her [National Lass] second litter to Pretty Short faired much better - producing the very fast feature race winner DENVER. But it was her 3rd and 4th litters that really made a name for National Lass as a broodbitch.

National Lass' 3rd and most successful litter to Worth Doing (ex Brother Fox)produced dual Group 1 winner and sire LITTLE DENVER - along with Derby Finalist and sub 30 sec winner National Hand, National Dingaan etc.

Her [National Lass] 4th litter to Amerigo Man (ex Brother Fox) also proved highly successful - with Group 1 winner National Leader, National Night & National Bobby.

National Lass' 5th litter again to a son of Brother Fox and litter brother to Amerigo Man - Carnival Boy, a failure of a sire, still produced Group race finalist Little National. Suggesting it was more the quality of National Lass than Carnival Boy, that saw a successful progeny born.

Which begs the question why was National Lass' first litter to Brother Fox unsuccessful, yet to a number of sons of Brother Fox, extremely successful? The most obvious answer muct be pedigree and something many layman just don't seem to realise the importance there of!

Another example on the other side of the globe is Catunda Sanna (IRE). As a racebitch in Ireland, she won the one race from 15 starts for prize money of €63 (AUD$100). Yet as a broodbitch has thrown Group class greyhounds in nearly all her litters - Borna Magic [ex Split The Bill (AUS)], Killough Tale [ex Just The Best (AUS)], Killough Glen [ex Toms The Best (IRE)]. I mentioned nearly as to the immortal Token Prince (AUS) - the top class broodbitch Catunda Sanna, threw absolutely nothing of note! The fact she [Catunda Sanna] threw her best offspring to Australian sires, further emphasises the point, pedigree is the vital ingredient when choosing a sire for your valuable broodbitch.

Simply best to the best is nothing more than hoping for the best eg. Brother Fox x National Lass & Token Prince x Catunda Sanna. As these examples have shown, particularly with Brother Fox beeing National Lass' first mating - a broodbitch is worthy of being bred with a number of times to find that vital pedigree match!

Roanokee was undoubtedly a class greyhound on the racetrack who transferred this to his offspring. Resulting in some outstanding race dogs and potential sires. Which is exactly what we are seeing in 2008.

Already through his son No Tail Told, the Roanokee sire line has produced the Group 1 Scottish Derby winner - Fear Me. Through another sire son Ballymac Maeve, boom greyhound Ballymac Under also a Group 1 winner. With a further two sire sons at stud in the USA - Team Record & Swahili Eile. And unfortunately one of the worst sires inflicted upon us...Ok he is turning out to be an Ok maternal grandsire...so what! Dont 90% of them do that.

Still can't give Moral Standards the respect he deserves as dam sire? To say he has performed just OK, to my mind is understating it! How many Moral Standards broods would have actually been bred with...surely only a handful and look at the OK results..............GROUP and FEATURE race wins.

I see Primo Uno has another smart pup in Turbo Uno (what a run from last in 30.34) and it doesn't take EINSTEIN to look at the pedigree and see MORAL STANDARDS is having alot of say in this blokes pedigree.

Well all I can sayis...I will take my chances with some of the new "kids on the block"...those that wish to search for semen to MORAL STANDARDS and look for bitches by him are welcome to their choices.
I always prefer the "win win" situation where the track takes precedence and the breeding barn is in the next classroom...if you can't get success on the track why wait 5 years to see if the experiment "may" work, but hey, like I said, to each his own...and you are right...I am certainly no EINSTEIN, practicality will do me just fine.

This is a very interesting discussion in the light of Farloe Melody's recent success as a broodbitch sire.

From memory most breeders stayed away from FM because his breed were brilliant but enigmatic, lacked early speed, you know, all the usual excuses, when they don't ping out like Brett Lee and run track records.

However, given everyone's love affair with the Hallucinate litter you'd think breeders would stay away from them due to the FM blood inherent in same.

Therefore, what I see is breeders being fickle and short-sighted, because those that kept their 'useless' bitches by FM & MS are being rewarded in a big way at the moment.

The same happened a generation or two ago with Curryhills Brute and Grove Whisper. Whilst their males were not competitive enough to produce any stud dogs of lasting quality their presence is staggering in the dam lines of some of our great dogs that we using as sires today and paying big bucks for.

That is not to say that bitches by Spiral Nikita, Larkhill Jo and other top of the line imports won't make their mark or a better mark in the future.

My point is if a breeder had faith to go to the import with their valuable colonial bred broodbitch why did they lose faith a generation or two later.

Surely, the reason they went to the import in the first place was to diversify the blood and introduce hybrid vigor for a future generation.

Hopefully, in the future lessons will be learnt and even if some of these new imports don't fire as great stud dogs that a greater % of their bitches will be retained by breeders for the future.

I'm no expert or criticizing anybody's breeding decisions, I'm just trying to comment as I see it.

I used Moral Standards on a bitch that had thrown multiple city and tab winners to Grove Whisper. The Grove Whisper litter all won races. The moral standards litter won three races including a maiden at Moss Vale in 30.92. I gave the only bitch in litter away and she has been bred with and I think might have thrown the winner of a couple of country races.

I agree that now we are blessed with greater options with well proven foreign sires and the impact on the breed can only be positive.

I can understand the frustration of some breeders who did go the next step and breed from a MS or FM bitch and got nowhere.

However, to counterbalance there were plenty of Brother Fox, Waverly Supreme & there will be plenty of JTB, AA & BL bitches that will throw legless ones.

Breeders don't get any smaller than me-i've just bred my first litter.
I went to Spiral Nikita for one reason,to(hopefully) set myself up for the future as far breeding stock is concerned.
To be honest,if i am going to do this right i can't afford not to look long term.
I've been lucky to get a top racebitch,who at the time was unproven-she has well and truly changed that in the interim.
I spoke to plenty of people on this forum,and all were of the same opinion-Spiral Nikita is a brilliant broodbitch sire,with the talent to throw top class race performers.
The outcome was one bitch,five dogs-all big and healthy.
Would have liked more bitches,but am very grateful to get one.
Anyway,the outcross opens up so many future options that i can pick and choose which dog i use.

In this instance however, they are not correct about MORAL STANDARDS (unless it can be proven otherwise)...I cannot sit back on here and see anybody talked into breeding with or buying from a bitch, simply because she is by MORAL STANDARDS, because it could well be a case of "in spite of him, not because of him"... I have followed this dogs career very closely since he arrived in Australia and he has been a rank failure, sure he has the odd broodbitch that has thrown a good dog, but who hasn't...his average in this area would be woeful in comparison to other sires IMHO (but I am prepared to stand corrected). I venture to say the Clive Burrell would love to turn back the clock and refute all the rave reviews he gave this dog, he just about recommended every 2nd client of his to go to the dog, it must have sent many people bust or close to it (maybe even Clive)...a contacted a very well respected and high profile breeder in the UK about the failure of MORAL STANDARDS in Australia, the confidential reply was this..."Ray I think that it was an absolute disgrace to send this dog to you people, after his pups hit the ground here he should have put away and kept as a pet", now these people could be wrong, and so could I...but I think not.
The purpose of my entering this thread was to give reasons why NOT to go looking for bitches sired by this dog unless they one of the proven successful few, that's all...nothing more, nothing less.
